Personality:
"You're too boastful. A true leader is calm and dignified," upon meeting Nagisa Shingetsu for the first time, it's incredibly obvious that he tries his best to embody these leadership ideals. The fact that he is technically only the vice leader of the self-proclaimed "Warriors of Hope" (at least in the beginning of the game) does not stop him from carrying himself the way a proper leader should. Incredibly intelligent, Nagisa gives off an impression of maturity far beyond what one would expect of a child in elementary school. However, if one were to point this out to him and liken him to an adult, that person might find themselves staring down the barrel of a robotic sniper rifle. Like all of the Warriors of Hope, Nagisa finds any likening to an adult to be the greatest offense possible. This is because an adult is just the absolute worst thing a person can possibly be. So deep are the Warriors' hatred and fear of adults that they desire to create "a paradise of children, for children, by children." In order to accomplish this, however, they believe that it is necessary to kill all the adults already living in their hometown, Towa City. Not only that, but their ideals are so far warped that their paradise manifesto includes a commandment that a child must kill themselves if they feel as though they are becoming an adult.

At this point, one might ask: how exactly did Nagisa and his fellow Warriors come to be like this? because, surely, no child is simply born this warped. And thankfully, one would be right about that. It's what happened to the Warriors as they grew up that molded them into happy little murder machines. Each of them suffered different types of extreme abuse at the hands of their parents and other adults that instilled a deep fear of all adults in their hearts. In Nagisa's case, he was treated as an experiment by his father, one of the teachers employed by the elementary school affiliated with Hope's Peak Academy. Like all of the teachers at Hope's Peak, he was also a researcher of talent and seems to have dealt primarily with the growth of talent. Curious to know what the growth curve would look like if a child was regularly pushed to their breaking point, he designed an experiment and used his own son as his test subject. Nagisa was forced to spend nearly all of his time studying, even time that should have been spent sleeping or eating. He was hooked up to IVs and given stimulants to keep him going when he grew tired, oftentimes studying for three or four days straight without rest. If he complained or resisted, he was physically reprimanded with unspecified "items" (though a flashback image shows that one of these "items" was some manner of combat knife). His father even went as far as to install cameras in his son's room so that 24/7 surveillance was possible. But the physical damage was nothing compared to the psychological damage this caused Nagisa. He more or less thrives on people expecting the best of him and living up to, if not surpassing, those expectations. His greatest fear is disappointing anyone who has expectations of him, believing that they will leave him if he fails to live up to their standards. Not only that, but he has the tendency to inflate these standards to extremely high levels beyond what is actually expected of him. As a result, despite the harsh treatment he received from his parents, for most of his life Nagisa just took it and tried his best to live up to their expectations. Though he obviously and understandably did not enjoy it and was eventually driven to the point of attempting suicide with his fellow Warriors. Before they could jump from the roof of Hope's Peak Elementary, however, they were stopped by Junko Enoshima, who took the five children under her wing. By preying on their insecurities and weaknesses, she was able to lead them into believing that she actually loved and cared for them. Of course, in reality, this was not remotely true and she saw them as little more than tools. It was because of her influence that they officially became the Warriors of Hope and began their crusade against all adults, even killing their own parents.

During his days at Hope's Peak Academy's affiliated elementary school, Nagisa was known as the Super Elementary School Level Social Studies Period. However it would be a mistake to think that his talent is confined to just this one subject. As the boy himself would say: "Social Studies is but one area of my expertise. I excel at all scholarly pursuits." And he's certainly not kidding about that claim. He is undeniably a highly gifted and intelligent child, and there's a reason he became The Sage of the Warriors of Hope. He has an expansive vocabulary which he clearly knows how to use, and is capable of carrying on philosophical debates with those older than himself (one of whom is Touko Fukawa, a literary genius). The things he loves most in the world are dictionaries and he has so many books that he doesn't have enough shelf space for them all in his room, despite the fact that nearly every wall is a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. He is the main strategist of the Warriors of Hope, incredibly focused and always thinking several steps ahead when planning. Rarely does he ever act on impulse.

Despite the fact that he (correctly) claims to "excel in all scholarly pursuits," Nagisa is not actually as conceited as he may sound. In fact, he's actually an incredibly humble and caring individual. When speaking of the abuse he and his fellow Warriors suffered while growing up, he always downplays his own, claiming that he didn't have it as bad as the others. He always puts the needs and desires of others before his own, and does whatever he can to protect those he is closest to, or those he sees as incapable of protecting themselves. Of all the Warriors of Hope, he had the strongest desire to create a children's paradise, specifically so that children would no longer have to suffer at the hands of adults. While the others were more interested in playing the Demon Hunting Game, Nagisa took little pleasure from it and only agreed to it because Monaka wanted to play. He constantly comments on how much work needs to be done to complete their vision, and that the game is a distraction from what SHOULD be their top priority. This, along with his concern about the wellbeing of his friends, often makes them view him as an uptight nag. Which isn't exactly incorrect, but at least his nagging comes from a good place. Even if he insists that they drink milk with breakfast instead of soda. Of course, there are many other ways in which Nagisa's caring and compassionate nature makes itself evident. After Masaru and Jataro are defeated by Komaru and dragged off by the Monokuma Kids, Nagisa is the only one who does not immediately write them off as dead and wants to try looking for them. Not only that, but he is the only Warrior who is never outright mean to Jataro, who serves as something of a punching bag for the group (Masaru pranks him a lot, Kotoko and Monaka both claim to hate him). While he does oftentimes ignore the other boy or interrupt him while talking, he also sometimes offers him words of encouragement. When all the "executed" Warriors are reunited at the end of the game, Jataro is pictured clinging to Nagisa's arm in a way that makes it clear that he sees the other boy as something of a comforting, trustworthy figure. In that same image, Nagisa himself has taken a firm, protective "if you want to hurt them, you'll have to go through me" stance in front of all three of his friends.

As stated previously, Nagisa acts very mature for his age; he even thinks of himself as something of a babysitter for all of his friends, save for Monaka. In reality, this isn't quite as true as he'd like you to believe. While he is undeniably responsible and has a good head on his shoulders, he's not as emotionally mature as one would expect based on initial impressions. While he is mostly a very calm and level-headed boy, he can become incredibly emotional when provoked. He completely loses his cool in these instances, and begins acting on impulse instead of his usual calculated logic. After being called a traitor by Nagito Komaeda, Nagisa became so enraged that he ended up attacking the older boy with his robot, dragging him back to the Warriors' headquarters where he then proceeded to tie him up and literally kick him while he was down, yelling and screaming about how Nagito had ruined everything. This fit is the first time we see Nagisa really and truly act like a child, and it highlights just how immature he really is, at least from an emotional standpoint.

While Nagisa isn't exactly naïve and is incredibly intelligent, he's a lot easier to manipulate than one would assume. This stems from his emotional immaturity and his abusive background. Junko was able to trick him into believing that she loved and valued him, simply because she gave him the positive attention that he craved, yet never received from his parents. She tricked him so thoroughly that even when Touko logically and correctly points out that she was using the Warriors of Hope, Nagisa's response is that he doesn't care. He's so deluded into believing that she actually cared about him that it doesn't matter if he was just her tool or a means to an end. But Junko isn't the only one who is able to bend him to her will, Monaka does so as well. Like Junko, Monaka also manages to wrap all of the Warriors of Hope around her little finger while not actually caring about them at all. While her family did treat her poorly, she exaggerated some of their abuses in order to make herself seem more pitiable. Naturally, this instilled a sense of kinship in her classmates, to the point that all four of them viewed her as their "princess" who needs to be protected and kept happy above all else. With Nagisa, however, she took this manipulation even further. In the middle of his aforementioned tantrum over Nagito ruining everything, she took advantage of his vulnerable emotional state and pushed him to the breaking point. Not only did she come clean about the fact that she never cared about the children's paradise plan, but she also told him that she never expected anything of him anyway. All while kissing him (not the first time she took advantage of his crush on him in order to get what she wanted, but definitely the worst instance of it) and keeping eerily calm in contrast to his screaming and tears. All of this led to Nagisa breaking down completely and rushing headlong into a battle against Komaru to prove himself. Sadly, even if he had won, it wouldn't have accomplished anything, as Monaka both expected and wanted him to fail. Yet, in spite of this cruel and manipulative treatment, Nagisa is still capable of showing Monaka compassion. In the Danganronpa 3 anime, which takes place an unspecified amount of time after the events of Another Episode, Nagisa asks that Komaru to please go easy on Monaka when Komaru and Touko go to to face off against her and stop whatever new plans she's put into motion. She was a friend, and he doesn't want to see her hurt or killed, once again highlighting the caring and compassionate nature hidden beneath his calm and cold exterior.

While he gives the impression that he is firm in his resolutions, Nagisa is actually much more conflicted than he claims and acts. In his heart of hearts, he knows their revolution is wrong and at times even feels some regret over what they've done. Of all the Warriors, he seems to take the least pleasure in killing adults (Masaru and Jataro both keep bodies as "trophies", Kotoko speaks repeatedly about how much she enjoys taking revenge, and Monaka is just awful all around). But his desire to protect children outweighs those feelings, and he is able to mostly push them aside and justify their actions to himself. In one of his memoirs, he writes about just how conflicted he is, not only over killing adults in general but in killing his parents specifically. Because despite how he was treated, he still loves them and feels that killing them was wrong. And prior to Junko's influence, he used to berate himself on those occasions where he failed to reach his father's unreasonable expectations. While he recognized that self-hatred was a waste of time and accomplished nothing, he still vowed to work as hard as possible so as to never disappoint his father again.

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? if possible, could I get something that's a little bit of both? Fitting in some ways and conflicting in others? If that's not doable, then either is fine! So long as it's somehow related to his character and not 100% random, surprise me!
Opt-Outs: werebear, arachne, demon, minotaur, werewolf
